I haven’t really posted anything for the past week, because I was having a rough week and I wasn’t feeling very inspired. But that lonely week did inspire me to start a new project which I will probably post really soon, so please be on the look out for that! I hope you like it and are able to contribute.
I chose this picture for Weekly Wishes, simply because I miss Mark (and him playing basketball. Can you find him in this picture? Air hugs if you do!). He hasn’t had internet for the past three days, so we haven’t been able to talk. It’s be SOOOO HARD, since this is probably the longest we’ve ever gone without talking to each other. I have so much to tell him, so I hope he gets his internet back soon!
Now onto my goals. Last week, my goals were to read more and go to bed earlier. I was kind of successful with reading more… I didn’t get to translating my Japanese books, but I did start Guns, Germs, and Steel and it’s definitely a book for me. I love the topic because it deals with people and how societies were formed and how differences arose. I have a horrible attention span though and start reading right before I sleep, so I barely read anything. I definitely need to fix that or I will never finish the book. And going to bed earlier? I didn’t have to try very hard on this because work is making me so tired! Teaching five classes a day to elementary school kids is sooo tiring. I think it’s even more tiring that I have to make an effort to talk very slowly. I feel myself slowly losing energy when I do so. It’s only 10pm here, but my eyes are slowly closing. Need to get through this post… haha!
So what is my goal for this week? Be happy and be positive. I was having a tough weekend and you’ll read more about it once I start my project, but I had never felt so lonely and sad. I had so many negative thoughts that I really didn’t want to think, but they overpowered me. Nothing anyone said made me feel better. I want to try my absolute hardest to have a happy and positive week/weekend and go back to the person I usually am. I have to immerse myself with positive thoughts, readings, and conversations. I would like to make a positivity wall, but I will have to hold off on that until next week since I’m traveling all weekend. That’s a new project I would love to start and finish! If you have ideas of what I can do, let me know! I’m totally open for suggestions :)
What are your goals for this week? I hope you all have a great and productive week!
Hi everyone! How was your weekend? I didn’t even realize it was Labor Day until Mark told me. While a lot of you have the day off, I started teaching (finally). Well, sort of… Today was the opening ceremony for the schools, since it was their first day back from summer vacation, and it ended up being a short day for the kids. I introduced myself probably 20 times today and now 500 students know who I am. I still have to do that with three more schools. Tomorrow will be my first official day of teaching (ahhh!) as I go over my self-introduction PowerPoint. Wish me luck! I hope my super kawaii and brightly colored slides will appeal to them.
How did I do on my goals from last week? I was so proud of myself. I cooked everyday last week, with the exception of Friday, but I already knew that I was going to a dinner party. I don’t think I’ve ever cooked that many times in one week and I’m so happy that I stuck with it. Dinner parties are really expensive ranging from ￥2500 to ￥4000, maybe even more. So far, I’ve been to three, so if you do the math… yeah, it’s a lot of money. Unfortunately, the one I went to on Friday was mostly seafood. The only seafood I like is cooked fish (I know I’m in the land of sushi, but I don’t really like it), so getting a lot of squid and raw fish, made me feel like the price wasn’t worth it. I must continue cooking as much as I can so I can save up for these dinners and traveling.
As for budgeting, I’m still in the process of finding a method that works for me. Some people suggested envelope method apps or going on Pinterest to find different budgeting methods. Within the next week or two, I will start looking at some of these different methods and see what works best for me.
So what’s in store for this week? I would like to do some reading. I checked out two children’s books from my local library which I’m going to translate. I started translating the dinosaur book, but it took me a while to get through the first quarter of the book. I definitely underestimated how elementary my Japanese is. But! No matter how hard it is, I need to push through it because it’ll definitely benefit me in the end. I also bought Guns, Germs, and Steel, which my dad has been telling me to read. I did see part of the documentary in school and I enjoyed it. This book is right up my interest alleyway (I majored in Anthropology!) and I hope to gain more insight and knowledge about how societies came about.
Another small goal that I would like to continue for the rest of the year is to go to bed earlier. You’re not in college anymore, Mallory! Staying up to the wee hours of the morning isn’t going to get you anywhere! Today I had to start waking up earlier for work and let me tell you, I’m exhausted right now and it’s only 8pm (that’s when I started typing this). And it’s only the first day! I need to be sure to start getting a good night’s rest so I can get through the day with a lot of energy. I have to teach about four classes a day and add that in with weekend traveling, my energy is probably going to take a hit eventually. I need to make sure I’m healthy and energized for as long as possible.
I hope you all have a great and productive week!
Hi everyone! I hope you all had a great weekend! I went to Osaka over the weekend and had a ton of fun. You’ll probably be hearing about my trip within the next couple days, so be on the look out for that. Last week, I didn’t get to post for Weekly Wishes, since my internet broke, but I tried to make progress on my Japan goals for the year. The major goal I’ve been working on is studying Japanese each day. Once I start teaching, I won’t have time during the day, so I’ll need to make time during the evening to get at least an hour of studying each day.
Two weeks ago, my goals were: study Japanese, clean my apartment and unpack, and manage my time better. How did I do? I realized during the week last week, that I should focus more on vocabulary than trying to perfect grammar. I think it’s more important to know more words so can better piece together what people are saying. Also, without any vocabulary, how will I even be able to use the grammar points I learn? I have about five pages worth of vocabulary that I’ve been adding to since the beginning of the month. I need to make sure I memorize these and continue adding onto these.
I cleaned my apartment! This week, I need to clean my bathroom and shower and… finally unpack… Someone commented that I should reward myself for unpacking. I do need to do this with some bread, ice cream, or milk tea, because it’s pretty bad that I still haven’t unpacked. And managing my time? I honestly can’t remember if I did this or not. Okay, for sure I need to get on this. Fingers crossed.
What are my goals for this week? Along with continuing to study, my goal is to cook every day this week with the exception of Friday, since I have plans, and to find a budgeting system that works for me. I did a lot of thinking over the past week, especially after I read Nicole from Treasure Tromp and Chelsea from Lost in Travels’ posts on the envelope budgeting system. This is my first full time job and I’ve never seen a paycheck so big before the other day. I know what my long term goals are that involve money (car, house… you know, those adulty things) and also my short term goals (travel, food, and clothes galore!). How will I be able to save money and also satisfy my urge to travel and buy clothes? I decided that I need to really involve myself in a budgeting system and get into the habit of it now. Right now, I started filling out a budget spreadsheet to see how much I’m spending weekly, but I honestly have no idea what it all means. It just looks like a bunch of numbers floating around. I hope over time I’ll be able to figure out what it all means and become a lot better at splitting up my money into different categories.
I have a lot of trips plan within the next few months, so I’ll need to somehow save up and factor all these things in together. Ah! It can be so overwhelming! Anyway, back to my goal of cooking every day this week… it’s all part of my big plan to save money. And I also want to learn how to cook more Japanese recipes.
I wish everyone the best with their goals this week!
